Mold Remediation in North Bergen & Hudson County, NJ

Mold Remediation That Starts With the Moisture Source

Mold remediation is the process of finding what is feeding the mold, containing the affected area so spores don't spread, removing mold-damaged materials, and drying the structure so it doesn't come back. Summit Restoration and Build handles mold remediation for homes and businesses in North Bergen and throughout Hudson County, from a single basement wall to a whole apartment unit.

Mold needs moisture to grow. A slow plumbing leak, a past flood that never fully dried, condensation in a poorly ventilated bathroom, or water that came in through a roof or foundation can all start it. That is why we don't just remove what you can see. We identify the moisture source first, because removing mold without fixing the water problem means paying for the same job twice.

We are based in North Bergen, so we know the area's housing: older multifamily buildings, row houses with shared walls, finished basements and basement apartments. These are exactly the places where hidden moisture turns into mold. Call for 24/7 emergency dispatch, or request a free on-site inspection.

Our Mold Remediation Services

  1. 01

    Moisture Source Investigation

We trace the water feeding the mold, whether it's a leak, past flooding, condensation or seepage. We use moisture meters to find wet materials behind surfaces that look dry.

  2. 02

    Containment

We isolate the affected area before disturbing any mold. Containment keeps spores from spreading to clean rooms during removal.

  3. 03

    Removal of Mold-Damaged Materials

Porous materials that mold has grown into, such as drywall, insulation and carpet, are cut out and removed. Non-porous surfaces are cleaned.

  4. 04

    Drying and Moisture Control

We dry the affected structure with commercial-grade equipment and apply moisture control to prevent regrowth.

  5. 05

    Basement and Crawl Space Mold

Basements are the most common place we find mold in Hudson County homes. We address the mold and the dampness behind it.

  6. 06

    Repairs and Rebuild

When remediation requires removing walls, ceilings or flooring, our team repairs and rebuilds the affected areas, so you don't need a second contractor. See our reconstruction services.

Can You Remove Mold Yourself?

It depends on how much there is and what caused it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that if the moldy area is less than about 10 square feet (roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch), in most cases you can handle it yourself. The New Jersey Department of Health suggests getting a professional opinion for areas between 10 and 100 square feet, and hiring a qualified contractor for anything larger than 100 square feet.

Call a professional regardless of size if:

  • the mold came from sewage or contaminated water (EPA advises professional cleanup in that case; see our sewage cleanup page)
  • the mold is inside walls, ceilings or HVAC ductwork
  • you smell a musty odor but can't find the source
  • anyone in the home has asthma, allergies or a weakened immune system
  • the mold keeps coming back after cleaning

A Note on Licensing and Testing in New Jersey

New Jersey does not license or certify mold remediation companies. The New Jersey Department of Health states that there are no state certification programs for mold services. Any company calling itself "New Jersey licensed" for mold is saying something the state doesn't offer. Ask instead what the company does, how it contains the work area, and how the job will be checked when it's done.

The Department of Health also advises using a different company to test than the one that removes the mold, to avoid a conflict of interest. We agree. If you want post-remediation testing, we recommend an independent assessor. And be wary of anyone who promises to make your home "mold-free": the Department of Health notes that no building can be made completely free of mold. The goal is to remove the growth and fix the moisture problem so it doesn't return.

Mold After Water Damage in Hudson County

Most mold problems start as water problems. The EPA and the CDC both advise drying water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. When a pipe bursts, a basement floods or a roof leaks, the speed of drying is what decides whether you'll be dealing with mold weeks later.

That is why our water damage restoration and mold remediation work go together. If you've had a leak or flood, extracting the water and drying the structure properly is the best mold prevention there is. If the water was never fully dried, we'll find out where the moisture went and remove what it damaged.

Hudson County's building stock makes this especially important. In multifamily buildings, a leak in one unit can travel through ceilings and shared walls into the next. Basement units and finished basements sit below grade, where dampness is constant. Wherever the moisture came from, we track it to its source.

Residential and Commercial Mold Remediation

For homeowners and tenants: We remediate mold in houses, apartments and condominium units. We contain the work area to keep the rest of your home livable and protect your belongings during the process. If belongings were damaged, we can document them for your insurance claim.

For property managers and businesses: We handle mold in offices, retail spaces and warehouses. We coordinate access and scheduling with managers and owners and prioritize the areas you need back first, so operations can resume as quickly as possible.

Mold and Your Insurance Claim

Whether mold is covered usually depends on what caused it. When mold results from a sudden covered event, such as a burst pipe, many policies cover the resulting damage, often up to a limit. Mold from long-term leaks, humidity or deferred maintenance is commonly excluded. Read your policy or ask your agent.

What helps any claim is documentation. We document the damage and the moisture source from day one, with photos and moisture readings, and our team can communicate directly with your adjuster if needed. Learn more about our insurance claim assistance.

Mold Remediation FAQs

Does New Jersey require a license for mold remediation?

No. New Jersey does not license or certify mold remediation companies. The NJ Department of Health states that there are no state certification programs for mold services. Ask any company how it finds the moisture source, contains the work area, and verifies the job when it's finished.

Can I clean up mold myself?

For small areas, often yes. The EPA says most people can handle less than about 10 square feet (roughly 3 by 3 feet) themselves. The NJ Department of Health recommends a professional opinion for 10 to 100 square feet and a qualified contractor above 100 square feet. Mold caused by sewage or contaminated water should always be handled by professionals.

How long does mold remediation take?

It depends on the size of the affected area, how much material must be removed, and how long drying takes. A small contained area is a much shorter job than mold spread through several rooms. After the free on-site inspection, we'll explain the scope and expected timeline for your property.

Does homeowners insurance cover mold remediation?

It usually depends on the cause. Mold resulting from a sudden covered event, like a burst pipe, is often covered up to a policy limit. Mold from long-term leaks, humidity or neglected maintenance is commonly excluded. We document the damage and moisture source to support your claim and can speak with your adjuster.

Should the same company test for mold and remove it?

The NJ Department of Health advises against it, because the same company testing and remediating creates a conflict of interest. If you want testing before or after remediation, we recommend an independent assessor. Our job is to find the moisture source, remove the mold-damaged materials, and dry the structure.

Can you make my home mold-free?

No one honestly can. Mold spores are naturally present in indoor and outdoor air, and the NJ Department of Health warns against contractors who promise a mold-free home. Remediation removes mold growth and corrects the moisture problem that caused it, which is what keeps it from coming back.

How quickly can mold grow after water damage?

The EPA and CDC advise drying water-damaged areas and materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. If your property had a leak or flood that wasn't dried quickly, have it inspected even if you don't see mold yet.

Do you handle mold in apartments and commercial buildings?

Yes. We remediate mold in houses, apartment and condo units, offices, retail spaces and warehouses in North Bergen and throughout Hudson County. In occupied buildings we contain the work area and coordinate access and scheduling with owners and property managers.
